BIOGRAPHY

From an early age, Nathan Pennington showed a keen interest in drawing, following in the footsteps of his mother and several generations of family artists. He was born in Dundee, Scotland, where his family was located for a few years, but then moved to Louisville, Kentucky at a young age. It was in Louisville where Nathan met his first two influential teachers and mentors, Caffy Whitney and Seth Fite. These two painters instilled in Nathan a great love for drawing and painting, and consistently encouraged him to pursue his art in a serious manner.

Throughout his high school years Nathan concentrated on drawing, painting, and art history. He was the recipient of many awards including the Gold Key Art Portfolio in the national Scholastic Art competition and was a Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts attendee in 2021.

Since 2022 Nathan has been living in Old Lyme, CT and studying drawing, painting, and sculpture in the traditional European atelier model at the prestigious Lyme Academy of Fine Arts. As of 2024 Nathan also serves on the faculty of the academy.

Nathan’s inspiration comes largely from technical mastery, which is why artists such as John Singer Sargent, Diego Velázquez, and Rembrandt are some of his most cherished influences.
